CCEA Teaching, Coaching, Evaluating, and Supervising

Offered by: Bill Hanlon

Bill Hanlon is offering a series of 26 courses offered for free to CCEA members only. Bill’s knowledge of mathematics, combined with his knowledge and insight of working with students struggling in math and/or students living in poverty, brings a uniqueness to his brand of professional development that focuses on math content strategies and instructional and assessment strategies that set students up for success. Additionally, Bill will focus on the following four principles throughout each of his courses:

Linkages: Allows teachers to introduce new topics in a familiar language, which makes students more comfortable in their learning. It also allows teachers to review and reinforce concepts and skills or address student deficiencies as they teach their assigned curriculum.

Examples Matter: Nothing ruins a lesson like a bad example. Using simple straight-forward examples that work, that clarify, and don’t bog students down in needless arithmetic in initial instruction is key to student understanding and building student confidence. Those examples are followed by using repeated scaffolding to reach grade level expectations.

Repetition Matters: Repetition is the mother of learning. It builds in the automaticity and familiarity students need to make decisions and be successful in math.

Testing: Tests should be purposely designed to set students up for success not only on the unit or chapter tests, but also on high stakes tests such as PARCC, SBAC, ACT or SAT. Students should clearly know what we expect them to know, recognize, understand, communicate and be able to do before instruction begins.
